Candy
Eclat D'Etoile's Trick Or Treat
Candy had originally been placed with Marla of Attra Dea Belgians. Candy was a sweetheart but went through some
pretty hard fear stages. The general consensus was that she was not mentally or physically good enough for breeding,
though would make someone a fine companion, and so she was rehomed. When Candy was about 9 months or so, the
family suffered a tragedy and could no longer take care of Candy. I took her, and fell in love with her exhuberance, her
high drive, and zest for live. To this day I wish I'd kept her.

Candy's temperament had really come along. She wasn't the puppy I'd remembered, backing up and growling at
strangers. Nope, she was outgoing and loveable, and just super sweet. She was a small girl; Only 20.5 inches at the
shoulder, and so fine boned that she was never more than 18 lb. Structurally she was very straight both in front and
rear, and didn't move well; As badly as I wanted to keep her, I knew I couldn't breed her, and I was expecting a show
puppy in just two months time... And so I went about looking for another home for her.

I had the worst luck... I found what I thought to be the most perfect home.

These people are "
CRUSADER CANINE" In Alberta, Canada. They train for protection, drug/bomb sniffing, etc. I was told
that Candy was to be their little boy's dog; The high drive malinois they were importing from Europe were too much dog
for him to handle. They wanted something soft and sweet, a family dog, and possibly an obedience demo dog.
Well, this was not the case. Like all of the other dogs they get, they resold her, for $500, after I GAVE her to them
because I thought they'd be an amazing home for her. This was a breach of our contract, but being so young and not
having alot of money, I never did take them to court.
After this experience I heard from several others who had similar experiences! And even though they told me they were
NOT breeders, I found out afterwards that not only were they breeding dobermans, but also small mixed breed dogs! I
was told so many lies, and it was poor Candy who had to suffer the consequences.
After they rehomed Candy, she ended up on Vancouver Island. Her new owner did not understand Belgians or Candy's
prey drive (infact Candy's breeder had refused to sell this person puppies in the past because this person was not
experienced enough to handle a Belgian -- Did Crusader Resources consider this?? Obviously not!!) and let her run
offlead while she walked on trails. A jogger ran past and Candy bit him on the ankle. This was fairly routine for her, as
when Marla had Candy she would chase her children and nip them, or when I walked with her Candy would try to nip
the bikers who passed by, or the wheels on my own bike.
However there was concern now that Candy was going to be put to sleep, as she did injure the jogger.
The last I'd heard, Candy's breeder was going to go and assess her.
I have not asked about Candy since then, as if I find out that she was put to sleep, it would break my heart.

I hope that Shaun and her husband at Crusader Rescources feel terrible for what they did to Candy, promising to be her
fourth and final home, and then putting her life in peril, and possibly killing her. These people are listed on several sites
for Belgian shepherd and German shepherd rescue, but I certainly hope that no one makes the same mistake I did. They
will take your rescue, possibly try to train it for protection, and then sell it for profit, to people who are not experienced
enough to handle these breeds.
